This post is in regards to one of the most awesome things about being a parent: being able to be a kid again!
A friend of a friend’s grandchildren out-grew their train table, and it was graciously donated and accepted into our home.
Yeah, it’s cool and all, but I saw this thing and immediately realized that’s it’s just a blank canvas. The board that is the train top is removable, and a standard-ish 48″x32″x0.5″. The width and height are the exact dimensions that wainscoting comes in at the store, so I thought I’d go out and find something else I could easily drop in to the train top.
Voila!
After digging around Lowe’s for a while, Jonathan and I found a piece of whiteboard for $10.
There are three places the top is supported by the table as illustrated below
On each end, there are two peices of wood about 0.5″x0.5″ and a larger piece in the middle.
My plans?
- I’d like to fit in a piece of pegboard and get the little guy a bunch of bolts and other pieces of wood to affix to it since he’s really into that sort of thing now — his own personal workbench.
- Although the middle piece eliminates putting something deep that’s the entire length of the table, it’s feasible to have a “beach” where he could have “land” on one side and as much as 3″ of water on the other.
- When the kids outgrow it, I’m going to keep it. I’m going to cut some particle board at the WxL dimensions, but half the depth. On top of that, I’m going to find some nice laminate flooring and make myself a really nice coffee table.
Anyone else have any ideas?

While sending this to someone, I thought “hey, this would be great for particle board and plexiglass for a coffee table now, and just put the artwork and photos of the kids in it when they’re not using it for other things. They can even decide what goes into it, glue it down, whatever.
